Octane Numbers.
Numbers octane (octane number) is a measure of the fuel's ability to overcome a knock when burned in engines. Value octane number assigned to 0-heptana n flammable, and the value of 100 to isooktana not flammable. A mixture of 30% and 70% nheptana will isooktana have octane numbers:
= (30/100 x 0) + (70/100 x 100)
= 70
= (30/100 x 0) + (70/100 x 100)
= 70
Octane number of gasoline can be determined through a test sample combustion characteristics of gasoline for combustion. Characteristics are then compared with the combustion characteristics of various mix-n heptana and isooktana. If there are characteristics that match, then the levels in the mixture isooktana n-heptana and isooktana is used to denote the value of the octane number of gasoline being tested.
Gasoline fraction from distillation towers generally have ~ 70 octane numbers. To increase the value of the octane number, there are some things you can do:
-Changing the straight chain hydrocarbons in the gasoline fraction into branched chain hydrocarbon reforming process instance change the n-octane into isooktana.
-Adding alisiklik hydrocarbon / aromatic into the final mix of gasoline fractions.
Adding the anti-knock additives in gasoline to slow the burning of gasoline. First use of lead compounds (Pb). Because Pb are toxic, so its use was banned and replaced with organic compounds, such as ethanol and MTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether).
